One year ago

It's hard to believe that one year ago I made my very first blog entry. Ever. Anywhere.

And what a strange year it has been. We went into a major recession, which we still haven't climbed out of. We had the worst bargaining session that anyone I've spoken to seems to remember. (As of when I'm writing this, the bargaining is still on-going for different folks.) And, of course, this site went live.

I've also come to realize that I was wrong about the Union when I originally started this site. I thought we needed a place for discussion. Some place the members could discuss the things that our leadership and staff don't really want the sheep to notice. Yes, I was wrong. We don't need it. We absolutely require it.

The more involved I get, the worse things come to light. As an organization, we have just as many, if not more, problems than the executives and management that we are supposed to protect members from—You know it's a fight. Bottom line is, it's them against us. And it gets worse from there. The further up you go, to the International, the more I smell something rotten.

Now is the time to act! Get involved in the site. We have a voice and need to use it! If the members don't start taking control of this member-run Union, it will slip further-and-further into the murky depths.

Maybe I've seen too much Star Wars lately, but I feel a little like Mace Windu in Revenge of the Sith. You know the part. Mace is fighting Chancellor Palpatine. Then, right before he wins, Anakin Skywalker turns completely to the Dark Side, betraying Mace Windu so that Palpatine can kill him. We have Mace Windu members, and Anakin Skywalker members. We even have Chancellor Palpatine members (although I'm not convinced they're in Local 503). I don't plan to trust Anakin enough to let him betray me. You shouldn't either.

Remember, Anakin Skywalker didn't start out wanting to be evil. His personality and circumstances came together to shepard him down that path. Our Anakin members didn't necessarily start out that way either, but they have been twisted by the Union environment that we have allowed to grow and fester.

Enough doom-and-gloom. On to the NEW YEAR! Thanks for joining us! Join In!
